Out and About
The baby and I ventured outdoors, just the two of us, yesterday. We stopped by Real Birth for a breast feeding clinic and then my office to meet my co-workers. I didn’t think I’d actually go out by myself, but I surprised myself, and Henry. It was nice to be out and about, soaking in the sun, even if it was freaken hot and we may be in a heat wave.
We went to the breast feeding clinic not for the regular reasons. There were about 8-10 other women in the clinic with feeding issues like not latching, pain when feeding, is my baby getting enough, etc. Ryan clearly is getting enough, but I have too much milk, so it sometimes makes him choke, spit up, throw up, gassy, etc and we’d like that stuff to stop. But Ryan decided to sleep through the first hour and fifty minutes of the two hour clinic. But I talked to the specialist about the problems I have. She told me to try the football hold or to recline a lot so that Ryan is basically on top of me and controlling the milk flow, instead of letting gravity do it.
And I gotta say I was probably the smallest person at the clinic with the biggest baby, though every body’s baby varied in age. But there was a woman next to me with a “big” 5 week old baby at 10 pounds. My 4 week old baby weighed in at a little over 11 pounds yesterday. While talking to the specialist, we did talk about the baby’s weight and she asked about his birth weight and how old he is and kind of laughed because she knew I had a very well fed and healthy baby.
With 10 minutes left, Ryan finally wakes up and wants to eat. The specialist comes over to take a look and he was feeding fine, but milk was leaking out of his mouth because there’s too much, so she told me to recline back as much as possible, to almost laying down.
When I got to my office one of my co-workers commented that he looked, “drunk with milk”, and he was. It was the first time I’ve heard it, but I think I’ll steal it. My co-workers loved him, but as Henry says, who will tell you your baby is ugly or that you look ugly or you still look x months pregnant, and he’s got a point, but dammit, my boy is cute!

i think there are more in manhattan than in queens. there were people in yesterday’s clinic from brooklyn, long island city and harlem. it’s really helpful for people who are having issues nursing.

yes, definitely ask me. the clinic was $25 for 2 hours. well worth it because you will get personalized attention and they know what they are doing.
