shaved ice from M. Matsumoto On our drive back from the North Shore in Oahu, we drove through Haleiwa and stopped by Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. It was one of the trucks recommended by Frommers but was kind of hard to find. We had to drive all the way down Haleiwa and back before we could find it. They have three types of shrimps, shrimp scampi (garlic sauce), hot & spicy and lemon & butter. When we got to the truck, they only had shrimp scampi left. We got one order to split. It’s $12 for 12 shrimps and 2 scoops of rice.

It was good shrimp, but coming from New York City and being Chinese, we’ve had good shrimp before. But it was the garlic sauce that the shrimp was in and was on top of the rice that was delicious. If they bottled the garlic sauce and sold it, I would buy them by the cases and ship them home.

After our shrimp, we drove to the other end of Haleiwa and got shaved ice from Matsumoto Shave Ice. It was $2 for a large and then $0.25 for a plastic cone, but it’s shaved ice and no matter what people say, it’s ice with sweet syrup on top. We got three flavors, lychee, lime and orange. Lychee was the best flavor. Their lime is pretty weak. The next day on our road to Hana, we actually had to pay $5 for a shaved ice on the side of the road. Crazy!!
