Megu
We went to Megu (62 Thomas Street) last night for an NYU Stern event. There’s a club there called Wine Cellar and they set up a sake tasting with food pairing for $85/head. I am not a fan of sake, but wanted to give it a shot and to try the food.
When we got there and there was some appetizers being passed around as well as champagne. There was probably about 60 of us and we were led into a private area with a view of the ice Buddha. We had a flight of 4 different sakes. I still don’t enjoy sake, but everybody else at our table liked most of the sake we tasted. We also got a very milky looking sake for dessert that came with a lemon. Didn’t enjoy that one either.
The food was good, but there was so little. We had five courses plus a dessert and I was still starving when we were done. All the food was served family style so the six of us shared everything.
We had:
- Yellowtail “Hamachi” Carpaccio w/ Spicy Kanzuri Sauce
- Crispy Shrimp in “Kanzuri” Spicy Cream
- Silver Cod “Hosho Yaki”
- Premium Kobe Steak “KAGERO YAKI” MEGU Style with Hennessy Flambee
- Mix of Sushi
- Green Tea cake
The yellowtail was really good. There was the sauce on it with a jalapeño pepper and a pepper corn. But we each had about two slices of it.
The crispy shrimp with the spicy cream sauce was good, but we each had about three-four of them.
The cod was very good and we each had about three bites of it. But I don’t know how you could mess up cod.
The kobe steak was very good. It was served on a big stone in a bed of little stones and was smoking when it came out. It was delicious and we each got about three slices.
The mix of sushi was disappointing. There was one roll that was pretty good with cooked crab, but then there was a line of tuna rolls that were small and very unspecial, all it was was tuna and another row of sushi with avocado and some fish that was bigger than the tuna rolls, but was so ordinary too.
The green tea cake was very good, but that may also be because I was still starving from the lack of food in the first five courses.
I think Henry and I will probably go back and to try different dishes like the grilled white tuna skewers, oyster platter, MEGU kobe beef slices, kobe beef carpaccio with fresh basil, grilled foie gras and foie gras in crispy kobe beef croquettes and hopefully the portion sizes will be bigger, but I doubt it.
