My parents, Nora, Henry and I went to the Grand Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant for dinner on Friday. Monica didn’t come because she’s a vegetarian and Alan doesn’t really like oysters. My dad has probably wanted to go to Oyster Bar for years now, so we finally decided to make a reservation and take them out.

We started with the Medley of Shellfish (10 raw oysters, 3 raw clams, 2 cooked mussels, 2 cooked jumbo shrimps), fried oysters with tartar sauce and a bowl of New England Clam Chowder. Only my dad, Henry and I ate the raw shellfish. The raw oysters and clams were so fresh and clean. None of us had any with sand in it and they tasted very very good. We were surprised! The fried oysters were also really good. My parents had the New England Clam Chowder and said it was good, but they have had better.

For our main course, my mom got the Scallop Panroast, Dad got the Mahi-Mahi Filet (broiled), Henry got the Monkfish (Tournedos, broiled, with Bearnaise sauce on the side) and Nora and I split the Broiled Tasmanian Ocean Trout Filet with Horseradish Crust. The panroast is not actually roasted, it’s more a bowl of cream-based soup. I don’t think Mom enjoyed it, I think she’d prefer it if the scallops were seared and she didn’t care much about the soup. I think Dad and Henry both enjoyed their fish. Nora and I liked our fish, except that it just looked like salmon, so we were disappointed. We wanted to try a different fish but ended up having a fish that looked and tasted a lot like salmon.

We tried two desserts, some kind of pear tart and an apple pie. Both desserts were disappointing. They may have been better if they were heated up in an oven. They both tasted like it just came out of the fridge.

If Henry and I go back, I think we’re just going to get raw oysters for our meals. They were the best we’ve ever had.
